Botox has become extremely popular in recent years as both a cosmetic treatment for reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles and as a medical treatment. If you live in America, the cost of Botox treatment is generally between $200 and $500 for each area being injected. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) quotes the average price at $376. ‘Package deals’ are offered by some clinics and may be an economical option for the patient.

In the United Kingdom, patients can expect to pay in the region of £180 to £350 for each Botox procedure, or possibly slightly more if multiple areas of the body are being treated. If the patient is resistant to the botulism toxin most clinics will offer an additional injection after 2 to 4 weeks at no additional cost.

The effects of Botox are only temporary. This is because Botox prevents the neurotransmitters from sending impulses from the nerve the muscles, causing mild paralysis to the localised area. Over time, new connections will be formed and the nerve impulses will resume, causing the effects of the treatment to wear off. The duration of the results will vary between patients, but in general you can expect the results to deteriorate over a period of 3 to 6 months. Therefore, to maintain the results you will have to pay for around 2 to 4 treatments every year.

Although it has not yet been scientifically proven, some patients who have undergone several Botox procedures have reported that the depth and appearance of their wrinkles has been permanently reduced by repeat treatments. In these instances a greater interval can be left between Botox injections, reducing the overall yearly cost of undergoing treatment.

Medical insurance rarely cover the cost of Botox injections when it is being used for cosmetic purposes. However, some policies will cover the expense if Botox is used for medical treatment. Policies vary greatly between insurance companies and not all forms of Botox treatment will be covered. In many instances, this is either because Botox is not considered medically necessary or because the FDA has not approved the use of Botox for certain conditions.

Although not everyone considering Botox injections can comfortably afford the expense of several treatments a year, it is important to remember that the cost should not be the only consideration when finding a practitioner. Botox treatment is extremely safe, but it is still imperative to find a doctor who is qualified to administer Botox injections. For instance, if the dosage is too high the patient may develop a drooping eyelid or uncontrollable drooling from the side of the mouth, depending on the area the injection was administered to. Finding an experienced practitioner is of far more importance than simply opting for the cheapest quote.
