Botox for Sweating

Botox
Botox is the brand name of the purified form of a toxin derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. It .....
Excessive sweating is an extremely distressing condition for the patient. As well as being uncomfortable, hyperhydrosis can produce bad odour and cause the patient to become very uncomfortable in social situations, leading to a loss of confidence. Botox treatment offers a solution for many sufferers as the Clostridium botulinum derivative temporarily blocks the nerves which stimulate sweating. Botox is also an increasingly popular solution among professionals who work under humid or stressful conditions, such as television personalities, chefs and salesmen.

In comparison to many of the alternative treatments available for profuse sweating - such as topical agents, tablets or surgery - Botox is extremely effective. Treatment can be uncomfortable but should not be painful, although many clinics offer local anaesthetic if the patient is concerned about the discomfort. The results are noticeable within 48 hours and the full effectiveness of the treatment becomes apparent after 7 days. The duration of the results vary from person to person, but the effects of Botox treatment usually last between 6 and 10 months when used for profuse sweating. It is considered safe to have repeat treatments or to have 'top ups' if the first treatment did not have the desired effect.

Although Botox is very safe, there are a minority of people who experience adverse effects. Somewhere between 3 and 10 percent of patients encounter side effects such as bruising and pain at the injection site, itching, haemorrhage or headaches. In more serious cases, patients developed flu-like symptoms or experience high levels of anxiety following their treatment. However, theses side effects need to be weighed up against the risks of alternative treatments to Botox, such as surgery, which have a higher incidence of complications.

The FDA has approved Botulinum Toxin Type A for the treatment of excessive underarm sweating. However, it should be noted that the safety and effectiveness of using Botox to treat excessive sweating in other areas of the body has not been established. For instance, the FDA has not yet approved Botox for the treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the palms of the hand).

As with all forms of medication or medical procedures, there are certain people who are precluded from undergoing Botox treatment. Pregnant women or nursing mothers should also avoid Botox treatment as there is a lack of controlled studies into the safety of treatment under these circumstances. Patients with a history of conditions such as multiple sclerosis are also unsuitable for Botox treatment. It is advisable to notify your doctor if you are taking medication as some antibiotics may interfere with the effects of Botox treatment.

Finding A Good Botox Doctor
Botox (Botulism toxin type A) is a relatively straightforward and safe procedure, but is still imperative that you know where and .....
Botox is a prescription drug and should always be used under the close supervision of a qualified professional. It also important to consult a medical practitioner to confirm that there are no underlying serious medical conditions causing the excessive sweating, such as hyperthyroidism, which need to be addressed and may be better suited to a different method of treatment.
